Please note that the following information is based upon the teachings of Oriental medicine. Some, but not all of the information presented, has been documented by clinical research. Though acupuncture is being studied in universities and medical institutions around the world, the research has not caught up with the demand. This is due to the relatively recent recognition of acupuncture as a viable medical modality as well as the western medical establishment’s historical resistance to its use. You may wish to follow up your reading of this material by exploring what the current medical literature has to say.

The information on this site is not designed to substitute for proper medical care. If you have any health concerns, please see your physician before you explore other options.

The Oriental medical system helps the body improve any health condition that results from the body malfunctioning or not optimally doing what it is striving to do. For example, your body does not want to have a headache. In fact, it works hard to avoid them. If you suffer from them anyway, your body needs help correcting the problem that causes them. Acupuncture effectively helps your body adjust its own healing mechanisms to resolve the problem. As a result, acupuncture can support you in healing from a wide variety of ailments.

The range of health challenges improved upon by acupuncture includes but is not limited to:

1. Ailments that your current medical care is not addressing to your satisfaction: Chronic pain, including arthritis, migraines, back or neck pain, phantom limb pain, osteoporosis, residual injury pain and others…

Chronic illness including diabetes, asthma, gastrointestinal difficulties, allergies, skin disorders, HIV, chronic fatigue syndrome, post stroke or heart attack, MS, tobacco, alcohol and illegal drug addictions, osteoporosis and others…

Acute ailments including influenza, colds, food poisoning, hangover, toxic shock syndrome and others…

2. Difficult side effects of medical treatment: Post surgical healing, chemotherapy side effects, fertility treatment side effects, prescription medication addictions, medical testing side effects and others…

3. Orthopedic and Traumatic Injuries: Sports injuries including tendonitis, muscle sprains and strains, muscle tares, joint inflammation and others… (This medical system was the very first in history to have a branch specifically devoted to sports medicine. The martial arts, originating in China, are still the most injury prone of the world circuit competitive sports. Acupuncture and Oriental medicine have been treating martial arts and war related injuries since its inception over 2500 years ago).

Accidents including whiplash, disorientation, muscle spasm, body pain and others.

Violent or sexual assaults including emotional trauma, foggy thinking, absent mindedness, loss of sexual sensation, sexual function problems, depression, mood swings, and others.

4. Hormone related problems such as PMS and other menstrual disorders, menopausal symptoms, sexual function and desire problems in men and women, adrenal fatigue, infertility in men and women and others…

Acupuncture is only one of the many tools used by practitioners of Oriental medicine. When you go to see a practitioner, he or she will have many technique options to help you. Please see Oriental medicine section of this site for further details.

This is a very different medical system than the one you are used to. It is worth learning about as it answers many of the questions you may have about your health that your physicians, as well-trained, hard working and sincere as they may be, do not answer to your satisfaction.

It depends. This medical skill evolved all over Asia so there were many techniques devised. Some generate a great deal of sensation, others cannot be felt at all and several range in between. In the Americas, parts of Asia and Europe, most acupuncturists use techniques that generate little to no sensation. Once acupuncture needles are in place, the patient rests comfortably as the needles are generally not felt once in place. An acupuncturist may either continue to interact with a patient or leave the treatment room while the patient enjoys the calming and relaxing experience privately. Some practitioners make pleasant music available for patients during this period.

Acupuncture can feel wonderful! The process stimulates endorphins, internal morphine-like substances that create a calming and pleasurable state. Many patients fall asleep, have delicious daydreams or feel deeply relaxed as a result of treatment. Pain and anxiety dissipate leaving one feeling calm yet energized.

A teenage patient recently told Dr. Dunas that he no longer felt cravings to ingest the illegal drugs so prevalent in his high school. “I get off on the ‘high’ of acupuncture treatments so I just don’t need drugs to feel great,” he reported. Many patients look forward to the deep relaxation experienced during acupuncture treatments.

Please share your thoughts, insights and questions with me below.

First, stress changes our blood sugar level. We’re designed to run away from tigers, and we need lots of sugar in our blood to do that. We will crave sugar when we’re stressed because the body is trying to push more sugar into the blood so you can run away from the tiger. That’s a pretty prehistoric description of what our bodies are doing, but the design of our bodies is very, very old – well over 100,000 years old. And that essential design is what we’re working with. So even though your stress level comes from seeing your mother-in-law, or from having to stay up late six nights in a row for business parties, that body of yours is still reacting the way it would react to a tiger that you saw in the woods 50,000 years ago. So, you’re going to crave more sugar, and if you want to keep your weight regulated through the holidays, that’s something to think about. Ensuring that your blood sugar stays normalized with your stress level being lowered will help you get through the holidays with less weight gain and fewer sugar cravings.

Stress changes your blood chemistry. We know that there is a whole new medical science called psychoneuroimmunology, which is the study of psychology and psychic experience, meaning mental and perceived experience, and it’s direct effect on the immune system. This field is probably 30 years old by now. It’s a very profound field of medicine and devoted entirely to understanding how what we think, see and perceive the world has a direct effect on our nervous system and thus an effect on our immunities. And one thing we know, unequivocally, is that immunity (or your ability to fend off an illness) is going to be weakened when your stress levels are high. So you are much more likely to get sick if you are feeling emotional stress and strain.

We’re designed to feel stress and strain – that’s part of the makeup of who we are. We’re well equipped to do that. But that’s not really the problem. The problem has to do with feeling it on a consistent basis. We’re designed to feel stress and then relax. Stress and then relax. We’re not designed to have an elevated stress level that just goes on and on for days or weeks on end. That’s when we fall short and that’s when your immunity could begin to suffer.

Stress really stops us from taking good care of ourselves. It’s difficult to cross your T’s and dot your I’s, so to speak. It’s difficult to be sure that you are eating on time, that you are getting enough rest, that you are really maintaining your routine when you are under stress. Either people eat an abundance of food or they don’t eat a thing. Those patterns can be very difficult on the system, and those are emotional eating patterns. When you feel emotional you eat more or eat less as a direct result. But it’s harder to listen to what your body is telling you it wants to do. Your intuition is not as keen, not as finely tuned. And your ability to sense that you are hungry or tired or that it’s time to leave the party – those instincts don’t scream as loudly when you are stressed because your body is in shock, to a very slight degree. We’ve become immune to our own inner voice and our inner knowing of the need to take care of ourselves. And that’s a real problem. We have to be very careful because stress can support our losing track of ourselves, our inappropriate eating, and bad sleeping habits, just because we can’t hear our own lessons.

If we were going to make this holiday season different, if we are going to make it exceptional by giving you more vitality and more energy, by making joy easier to come by, and by enlivening your intimate and romantic life – what would we do? We need to look at strategies for staying healthy and for monitoring your stress level.

In terms of your health and vitality, we know a lot about how stress really accentuates the possibility for illness. An interesting study was done by the television show “NBC Dateline” and Prevention magazine, in which 41% of the people interviewed said the holidays were as stressful as a job interview, i.e., very stressful. What’s interesting about that is we don’t really think about our stress levels accentuating during the holidays because it’s just par for the course. But the truth is we often do experience accelerated stress levels which has a substantial effect on our bodies.

Dr. Simon Rego at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine has written extensively on the effect of stress and disease, and there are other physicians who have written on this. It has really become a prominent topic in the medical lexicon. There is a direct correlation, so if we’re going to stay healthy it’s because we’re going to lower our stress levels and monitor ourselves just a little bit. There are small, specific steps that can be taken that will have tremendous effect on immune system, sex drive, and vitality.

Coming up in Healthy Body During the Holidays Part 2, we will explore how stress specifically affects health and sexual vitality, and what small steps you can take to improve vitality, energy, and stamina during the stressful holiday season!

Cultivation of a balanced and successful life must include self-knowledge. Once the fear and shame are pushed aside few areas of your life will provide more joy or self-respect than full realization of your erotic nature. Make love and find out what you are made of. Doctor’s orders!

How to create multiple orgasms in women!!!

If you are a woman, decide that no matter how inept you feel in every other area of life, you are capable of responding similarly to women who are multi-orgasmic if you or your partner know what to do.

Talk to your gynecologist. What does he or she know that will help make your sex life more pleasurable.

Buy books that will teach you more about the full extent of female sexual potential. Read them.

If you are married with kids, take two hours on a Sunday morning and send the youngsters to IHOP or the zoo or give them $100 and send them to an arcade. You want them so absorbed they forget all about you. Now you have to let yourself get so absorbed that you forget all about them too.

If you are a single woman go to a sex toy store or find a catalogue of sexual paraphernalia and buy yourself a few different g spot stimulators. This tool is designed to get where your fingers and household pliers cant. They come in slightly different shapes, angles and sizes. That is why you should try a few. They are also different firmnesses. The harder the tool, the easier it may be to initially find your G spot. Beyond that, personal preference reigns. Can I list a few sex toy catalogues?

Ready, set, go! Use all the time, toys and educational tools you have collected. Allow yourself several opportunities to grow from clumsy and awkward to surprised and delighted. There is no rush and unlimited joy awaits you.

In 1980, a profound lecture took place at the national meeting of the Society for the Scientific Study of Sex. Drs Perry and Whipple told attendees important information that most women and doctors still do not know enough about. While they acknowledge that one form of female orgasm is “vulvular” originating from the clitoris, there is another area from which orgasms, multiple orgasms in fact, stem. I paraphrase from their book, The G Spot and Other Recent Discoveries about Human Sexuality

There is an area inside the vagina that is extremely sensitive to deep pressure. It lies in the anterior wall (front or belly facing wall) of the vagina about two inches from the entrance, and has been found in every woman they had examined. When properly stimulated, the Graphenberg spot swells and leads to orgasm in many women. At the moment of orgasm, many women ejaculate a liquid through the urethra that is chemically similar to male ejaculate but contains no sperm. As a result of stimulation of the G spot, women often have a series of orgasms.

Diaphragms can inhibit stimulation of this area for many women as can weak musculature specifically of the PC, or pubococcygeus muscle. This is the muscle that helps you stop urinating mid stream. It is strengthened by Kegel exercises which are done by pretending that you are trying to stop your flow of urine while standing in bank lines, at red lights and over brunch at fancy buffets.

The data so profoundly affecting the physicians at that conference twenty years ago had been well understood by my professional ancestors, the physicians of ancient China, for thousands of years. According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) there are different levels of orgasm for women, levels which include the entire genital system with the upper levels being the most intense. How intense? Well, Freud’s head would have spun around so far he would have needed a chiropractor. What we know as the typical clitorally-based orgasm is considered level 4. To get to the whole shebang, level 9, the vaginal based response is involved. And what is interesting about the process of a woman moving from level one to level nine, is that she stops feeling sexual and becomes the feelings themselves. She looses her awareness of personal identity and becomes immersed in the being of loving. So orgasm not only means that she squirts like an elementary school drinking fountain, it also means she starts to think like one. And drinking fountains don’t think. That is the whole point.

Noble scientists have been determined to get the answers behind femininity's mysterious nature.

Noble scientists have been determined to get the answers behind femininity’s mysterious nature. We should exalt these brave souls at the next Macys Thanksgiving Day parade. Having fought society’s rigidity, and the closed-mindedness of their medical colleagues, they have forged ahead to figure out that magical mystery hole. Female sexual response is not the subject of congressional or media debate but progress is being made and we can credit that progress with changing women’s health, relationships and sexual pleasure levels around the country. Unfortunately, unless you make a point of expanding your knowledge base it is not likely that anyone will tell you everything you need to know. Though the information is there, few are aware of it and even most gynecologists do not keep up with it.

Drs. John Perry and Beverly Whipple did some groundbreaking work in the 1970s. I like to mention these folks all I can. They re-discovered what had been missed by Masters and Johnson, the Kinsey Report on Female Sexual Response and most American and European sexologists up until that time. They revisited the work of a German physician practicing during the mid-20th Century. Thanks to Whipple and Perry, Ernst Graphenberg has had a part of the vagina named after him. (We can only imagine what his life must have been like.) Graphenberg described an important part of the female genital anatomy and physiology that had been overlooked or underestimated. We now know it as the G SPOT.
