Trauma is a negatively impactful experience that can affect individuals on physical, emotional, and spiritual levels. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), trauma is understood as a disruption of the body’s natural order and flow of Chi. Understanding how trauma affects Chi can help us better comprehend its effects and develop more effective approaches to healing.

Trauma, whether it is caused by a physical injury, emotional shock, or difficult circumstance, can be likened to a wave of energy washing over the body. This wave disrupts the flow of Chi, the vital energy that flows through the body along meridians or channels. In short, trauma takes a complex and orderly system of energy moving through and maintaining the body and leaves chaos in its wake. Our immediate response is often characterized by denial or minimization of the experience, as the body’s first line of defense. Additional mechanisms kick in to protect against further harm.

Over time, trauma can sink deeper into the body, causing long-term physical and emotional problems. Chronic tendonitis, arthritis, anxiety, addictions, eating disorders, and asthma are examples of how unresolved trauma, physical and psychological, can manifest in the body. Addressing trauma as soon as possible is crucial to preventing long-term consequences.

In TCM, treating trauma involves considering the “energetic profile”, or condition of Chi/energy, within the individual. We look at how a traumatic event or injury has impacted individual internal organs. For example, trauma affecting the Heart may manifest as anxiety, while trauma affecting the Liver may lead to addictive behavior, ligament and tendon strains or other symptoms associated with that organ. TCM practitioners, like myself, develop tailored treatment plans to restore balance and harmony to the body.

As we continue to navigate the complexities of trauma, it is important to remember that healing is possible. Through the integration of traditional healing practices and modern interventions, we can create a more compassionate and supportive environment for those affected by both simple and complex trauma. By acknowledging trauma as a loss of order, we can work towards restoring balance and harmony to the body, mind, and spirit.
